This week in our CMC class we looked into what Computer Mediated Communication is and how we use it in our daily lives. According to Wikipedia it is defined as any communicative transaction that occurs through the use of two or more networked computers. Through advances in technology the definition has broaden or the devices we use have increased. Computers are not the only way that we communicate with our devices. Our phones have become little computers that we communicate to other phones or devices remotely. We also use other devices such as I-Pods independently and with our computers.
I personally use my phone to read e-mails, text, listen to music, check movies, and various other purposes. I also use an I-Pod for work. I teach an exercise class at 24 Hour fitness and download music to play from my I-Pod that I attach to a stereo at work. I have been able to record school classes, take pictures, and make notes to myself on my I-Pod as well. While I use my I-Pod independently, I also use it with my computer. I have been looking into buying an I-pad. The I-Pad does not have a usb port. My I-Pod will then work as a back-up that I can download information on and then plug it into the I-Pad.
In the readings it also said that the Internet makes a poor database: It's not centrally managed, there's no consistent organization, and information quality varies widely.
It is important to make sure that when using the computer that we know where the information is coming from and what the purpose of the information is serving. The information could be presented as information but really advertisement for a product or promotion for an organization with their own goals in mind.
Computers have become a wonderful tool, but at the same time we need to still need to be educated for the best ways to use it for Computer Mediated Communication.
